PIPEDA (federally regulated employers and most private-sector activity outside Quebec, BC, and Alberta) and the substantially similar provincial private-sector privacy laws in Quebec (Law 25), BC (PIPA), and Alberta (PIPA) require that employers limit the collection and use of personal information to what is necessary for an identified purpose, obtain meaningful consent, and provide employees with a right of access to their personal information.
Displaying employee home addresses or personal phone numbers to the entire company without a clear necessary purpose could create a compliance issue. SIN must never be displayed in a general directory — it is restricted to authorized purposes only.
